Barber combines quick trills with very long, float-y lines at perfect intervals. Allen is tasteful in his very, very minimal playing. Magner's atmospheric playing complements the sample beautifully. They have never, at any point in their career, sounded like this, but I sure as fucking hell hope they do again. Not only is it the best use of sampling for tDB, it doesn't even fucking sound like them. What is absolutely awe-inspiring, though, is the "Space" out of Jigsaw. There is absolutely NOTHING normal about this set, and it took me 3 hours to listen to it as I was constantly rewinding, in absolute awe of what I had just heard. What I will say is that from the Billie Jean Jam -> Svenghali intro, it was clear that they had started right where they left off, and at that point I knew this was a special, special show. The second set.I can't do it justice, so I'm not even going to try. It gets a little lame when they start these start/stop bits, but those breaks in flow are perfect rallying points, and out of the final point, they unleash a nice little Basis jam as if to say, "Yeah, we played it last night, but we're going to rock it hard tonight anyway, so strap in." And there it is. Don jam (thanks, Rich, for pointing out exactly what's so familiar about it), which is clever as hell and sounds great. But in reality, it's not sudden at all - Magner is laying down the lead at length, but it slides so well out of that Sven outro that all you can do is feel the jam take off.it's almost pointless to try to figure out what's going on because it doesn't matter as the music just lifts up and up, carrying you with it. Barber gradually winds these short bursts into a middle eastern jam, and as the jam builds and builds, you can feel it heading somewhere, and suddenly there you are - Munchkin. This ambient jam is just so beautiful.I about stopped dead in my tracks walking home when I first heard it. As the Svenghali ending peters out, however, they don't stop playing. The Pilin' unleashes some vicious breaks, getting some dirty dirty Ape-like shit going on before out of the thick of it they gradually start piecing together Svenghali.first very tentatively, as they peak their heads out of water, but then furiously, hitting the song HARD. What proceeds to unfold over the next two and half hours of music is downright perfection. The end of S&M is botched by Allen, and this flub is the first but not last of the show, but with a show this loose, it's just bound to happen. The 2nd jam gets really good right at the end with Magner laying on the S&M lines, and this segue is perfect. There's no dancing around or weirdness, just tight, straight-up 2.0 dance music, and that's fine.
And to say it's straightforward is not to take anything away. Everything about this RLH is as straightforward as it can be, so you better soak it up - this is the last bit of normalcy in the show.
It's on from the get-go, with a powerful RLH intro to kick things off. There is just so much shit going on, and they try a bunch of new ideas, new even for The Disco Biscuits, PERIOD. I say, without hesitation, that this is the best show with Allen Aucoin on drums (at least to this point). Without your dedication to preserve every recorded Bisco show and making sure the tracking is perfect as well, what would we all do? Thanks to Bisco for such and incredible and amazing night of music and to Dave Cooke for tracking this out and uploading to for me as well. This is def my fav Bisco show I have evers een, and many times throughout the night I stood there in awe instead of dancing! Because I couldn't freakin move :) Jigsaw is and has always been one of my favorite tdb songs, and to hear the uter SUBLIME version that was right smack in front of my face live, hell, I was truely amazed.
Being that I have listened to Bisco for YEARS, since around 1998, and have only seen them about 10 times live, well, they freakin BLEW ME AWAY! from the opening RLH to the closing RLH I was paralyzed. I'm glad I went and rolled tape for all of us music lovers to enjoy for many generations to come :) I went solo and taped solo and worked 12 hrs that day and didnt get hoem from the show til 3:00am(show wasnt over til 1am) and was back up at 5am :) ONLY would have done that for a select few bands, and bisco is one of them.
Small's and was one of the best sounding shows I've ever been to there. First off, thanks for the kind words on sound quality.
